The man goes to the bar, orders the drink, pays for it, picks it up , returns to where the lady is sitting, hands her the drink, and they have a chat.

Well that's what happens when I buy a woman a drink, why do I feel that I'm missing out on something here?????

You seem to be missing out on the sex. This seems to be what happens in Mrs Blairs world when an older man gets together with a jounger lady to talk about her career.
