Home affairs committee chairman, Keith Vaz, speaking during yesterdays question time said the government are likely to press ahead with national ID cards and were going to pilot the scheme this year by issuing them to foreigners entering the country. Press ahead? Of course they are. The Identity Cards Bill received Royal Assent in March 2006, and the UK passport office became the IPS (Identity and Passport Service) on 1st April 2006. The IPS website is unequivocal in saying the "National Identity Scheme will eventually become compulsory". The scheme will be obligatory for British, Irish and foreign nationals resident in the UK.
The ID cards will contain biometric data which will also be stored on a national database with other personal details. This data is being termed our "biographical footprint" which the government will keep and track. The scheme is being packaged up as though it were for our benefit, but the benefits listed on the IPS website are really pretty lame.

| 9 | allow the police more quickly to identify suspects and people they arrest | Is this really an issue, they have enough powers to hold people in custody until they find out who they are through normal "policing". Aren't most suspects already "known" by the police anyway? |
The cards will cost £30 each. With a population of 60million this will raise £1.8billion which will pay for extra public sector staff to run the scheme, and another public sector IT project to build the database. Are you comfortable with this? Would you have preferred this to have been spent on the NHS? Does the government have a good track record of storing data? Do you trust them with your "biographical footprint"?
I don't! And what's coming next? A CCTV camera in every home?

Great post, the greatest threat to countries is that their people are being homogenised, that means you also, and nothing is being done.
You will be assimilated, the Borg, apparently do exist.
These are you rights and freedoms that are being stolen from you, and you're being charged for the privilage.

O it just gets better.
there is also going to be a redo of the national census. It will now be every year. And it will include a massive amount of new questions. Such as "describe your sex life" "how you manage your finacies." "or if you have an erectile disorder" The FBI also wants there to be a 1000 dollar fine. For every question unawsered. See i dont want my sex life in a goverment file.
And Im just gunna take a guess. But im sure this follows.
1. reform of the patriotic act. Now they can randomly search your home. Just like 1 big prison. Where Feds can make sure you dont have any contraban. Or if you have Viagra in your medicine cabnet.
2.They will start "fixing" the Constitution. So the right to bear arms will go away.
3.As you said "we all get cameras in our home".
4. Well we might as well swear alligence to China. Become communist. Or have a lottery of texas and have a king.
5.Then after we have put that big fence up between US and mexico. Well realize what a bad mistake we made. Because now were stuck in our country with a Monarchy.
As far as i can tell we have 2 possibilitys
1.the goverment can get thier sh*t straight. And they can start giving us our rights back. and we stick to the constitution.
or
2. They keep it up. Turns out that americans are worse when it comes to thier rights being taken. and that Iraq was nothing compared to millions of americans. Goverment figures are either executed. Or go into exile. Theres a revolutionary war. And another Civil war. But this time we have accses to nuclear weapons.
Well africa isnt looking so bad after all.
I think ill just move to Ireland though. :)
